- Keep covers closed on unused outdoor outlets. Ask an electrician to replace damaged covers and provide weatherproof protection while cords are plugged in.
- Use GFCI-protected outdoor outlets. If you are unsure whether yours are protected, have an electrician check before connecting outdoor equipment.
- Choose extension cords marked for outdoor use, and avoid using corded electric tools in wet or damp areas.

- Interconnected smoke alarms sound together when one detects a fire, helping alert people in other parts of the home.
- Hardwired smoke alarms usually have backup batteries. Connection to household power does not eliminate battery maintenance.
- Smoke alarms have a limited service life. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends replacement 10 years after manufacture.

- Check each alarm’s manufacture date and replace units at 10 years, or sooner if the manufacturer directs. Have a qualified electrician handle hardwired installation.
- Check for smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level, including the basement. Ask about interconnected alarms if yours do not sound together.
